Pyritised Lopha Fossil (Guangxi, China) - 425_PL3

SGD 73.42
Only 1 available

5.9 × 1.8 × 3.0cm
Half a Lopha, with the matrix material round the back.
———

These are Lopha fossils that formed in an area rich in iron, thus the dusting of powdery pyrite over its surface.

Lopha is a genus of extinct marine bivalve molluscs which have existed since the Triassic period! They are characterise by thick, strongly ribbed shells with unequal valves.

Fun Fact about Lopha: They existed in a stationary state, and filtered sea water to extract nutrients.

And, I love how they look so much like Croissants! 😂
