Golden Beryl var. Heliodor (Sunny Days Pocket, Erongo Region, Erongo Mountains, Namibia) - 2404_H1

SGD 176.00

3.5 x 3.1 x 1.3cm

Heliodor is the beryl variety that receives its yellow colour from Fe3+ ions.

The name Heliodor comes from the Greek words 'helios', meaning 'sun, and 'doron', meaning 'gift'. In other words, it is a 'gift from the sun'.

Compared to some of the other beryls, heliodor is one of the rare ones (though less rare than Red Beryl aka Bixbite). For that reason, aquamarine from Afghanistan and Pakistan is often heat-treated or irradiated to turn it yellow, and these specimens and gems are then sold as heliodor, which demands a far higher price tag.

It isn't easy to find heliodor in its specimen form - sometimes, they can be found as singular prisms, or larger raw chunks at best.
